Hi! This is our resident coffee nerd among coffee nerds Alex Powar. He teaches our “Brewing Better Coffee at Home” class. The title kind of presupposes that you are already making coffee at home, but it really starts from square one. Honest.

He goes over things like brewing with scales and other tricks. Then he demonstrates these concepts on French Press, Chemex, Clever dripper, Hario V60, and Aeropress—everything but espresso. It’s good nerdy fun. The whole class runs about 90 minutes. At no point will Mr. Powar remove his shirt.

Participants go home with some of the coffee used in the class, and get a discount on brewing equipment. The consensus is that it’s a bargain for $25. Maybe that’s why they’re always sold out. That, and we limit the class to ten folks.

Scheduled classes:

Monday May 13th (full)

Monday May 20th (full)

Monday June 3rd (6 spots left)

Monday June 17th (10 spots left)

*all classes start at 6pm

Stop by the café, call our landline (415) 252-0800, or shoot us an email at orders@fourbarrelcoffee.com (subject line “coffee class”) for more information.

You probably know Bobby, either from his stint as an espresso tech, or his continuing position as Four Barrel Coffee’s very first barista and my dear friend. Anyway, Bobby Valentino Sanchez is participating in this year’s AIDS Lifecycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles on June 2nd.

He just decided to join the ride a few days ago, so he needs a lot of support to reach the minimum fundraising requirement of $3,000 before the day of the ride. Nonetheless, he’s simultaneously pumped and stoked, and we can help get him on his bicycle.

I’ve attached a link to his donation page, in case you would like help him achieve his goal. The money goes to the SF AIDS Foundation. Nice, right? Donations are TAX DEDUCTIBLE and can be done through installments.

To summarize: All donations are tax-deductible, support the SF Aids Foundation, and get Bobby out of our hair for a few days.

P.S. If you would like to view his progress or just be his friend, find him as @bobbyvalentino on instagram. He’d like to express serious thanks for all donations big and small.

We are super excited to showcase some amazing pieces in the show Time Spent by Mei-ling Humphrey here at Four Barrel for the next month. They are super amazing, so definitely check them out when you are in the cafe enjoying some tasty coffee.

Time Spent
Mei-ling Humphrey
April 18th – may 22nd
http://meilinghumphrey.com/

show:

In Time Spent, I directly appropriate anatomical images and illustrations, and paint them using thread. By drawing from a wide range of embroidery techniques and applying those techniques to images found in textbooks and medical imagery archives, I question assumed value systems. In contemporary Western culture, science is generally regarding as truth, or at the very least a concrete way to reach truth, and is respected as such. Within the art world, there is a subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) implied hierarchy of media. Painting is arguably very high on the ladder, if not the highest rung. Embroidery, on the other hand, is rarely considered art – it is craft. By framing my pieces and presenting them as paintings, I am asking the viewer what their values are, and where they come from.

bio:

Mei-ling was born in Hong Kong and lived there until she moved to Oakland in 2008 to attend California College of the Arts, where she received her BFA with high distinction. Her acceptance into CCA’s Individualized Major allowed her the unique opportunity to craft her own interdisciplinary education, drawing from diverse disciplines such as animation, print- and book-making, textiles, painting, metal and community arts.Mei-ling currently splits her time between the experimental project space IcTus Projects and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, a contemporary multidisciplinary art museum in downtown San Francisco.

Everybody’s talking about Omar. His work is on the cover of Momentum Magazine, Benny Gold’s blog, 111 Minna’s sketch party, Nooworks, and the weirdly popular Instagram handle @omongonz.

His art looks absolutely beautiful up on the walls. Just last week a boy and his mom stood in the middle of the floor for a long time, pointing and talking about each and every one. Damn hipsters.

Come by the shop on Thursday night, give Omar a kiss on the cheek, and chuckle as he blushes. 375 Valencia St SF CA 94103. For art inquiries, hit him up at omar (at) fourbarrelcoffee (dot) com. Cheers!

Four Barrel Coffee has teamed up with a local San Francisco resident that is fundraising for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. She is a participant of Team in Training, and is competing in the 31st annual Wildflower Triathlon on May 5.

Instead of a normal boring fundraiser, she had a creative idea to have a contest where donations of at least $5 would give the participant a chance to guess the number of coffee beans in our Limited Edition Coffee Jar picture below.

The winner and runner up get pretty nice prize packages donated by yours truly.

Check out the contest here, and give your support for a change for some sweet coffee gear.

Well, we’re on Galileo’s side. And to prove it, here’s a lovely little piece by bigshot San Francisco pop science writer Nathan Collins, of Nathan Explains Science. He and 4B’s Alex Powar get down and dirty with catalyzing mad reactions.
